Fissure Sealing
Is it possible to prevent tooth decay in children's teeth?
Fissure sealants are a preventive measure in pediatric dentistry that is intended to help prevent tooth decay. The fissures, i.e. the natural indentations on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, are sealed with a low-viscosity plastic. This sealing prevents bacteria from penetrating the fissures and thus preventing the development of caries. Fissure sealants are usually applied to the permanent molars of children and adolescents because these teeth are particularly susceptible to tooth decay.
The importance of fissure sealants lies in their preventive nature. By preventing possible tooth decay attacks, they help maintain the dental health of children and adolescents in the long term. However, good oral hygiene is still essential despite fissure sealing. Furthermore, regular visits to the dentist are necessary to check the condition of the seal and, if necessary, to renew it. According to studies, sealing the teeth reduces the susceptibility to caries by up to 70 percent.
