BOTOX INJECTION FOR TEETH GRINDING/BRUXISM

Botulinum toxin, better known under the brand name "Botox", is an all-rounder among medical active ingredients. The field of application of botulinum toxin goes far beyond aesthetic medicine. Botulinum toxin therapy can also be useful for teeth grinding.

HOW DOES BOTOX TREATMENT FOR BRUXISM WORK?

Botox can not only smooth wrinkles or relieve migraines, but also counteract teeth grinding/bruxism. Botulinum toxin is injected into the large jaw muscle on the right and left.

Chewing is not affected. Due to the size of the jaw muscle, the full effect only occurs after around 14 days and lasts for up to six months. However, a repeat treatment is recommended after 4 months due to the reduced effect.

ADVANTAGES AND POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF BRUXISM THERAPY WITH BOTOX

In contrast to splint therapy, botulinum toxin therapy stops the grinding completely. The muscle relaxes more and more over time, so that the clenching and grinding of the teeth stops. The enlarged jaw muscle steadily recedes.

If this is successful, the grinding will ideally not reappear after six months. Many patients are pleased about a side effect of the "Botox treatment": a face that appears narrower in the lower third of the face.Possible side effects include small bruises at the injection sites and, in rare cases, dry mouth.

WHO IS BOTOX TREATMENT FOR BRUXISM SUITABLE FOR?

In principle, botulinum toxin therapy is suitable for all patients who suffer from bruxism.

In the case of severe grinding, treatment with botulinum toxin can be carried out from the outset to alleviate the suffering quickly and thus pave the way for relaxation techniques. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and people suffering from neuromuscular diseases should avoid Botox.
